I'm a little late starting this blog. I should have begun it when I agreed to climb Kilimanjaro in theory (last October). Or when I got preliminary approval for unpaid time off from work to climb the thing (last November/December). At very least I should have started it when I started my first tentative steps of training (a fortnight ago). But I was too busy dreaming of Africa last October, really dreaming about Africa last November/December and trying to start putting together more than two minutes of jogging without falling over a fortnight ago.
But better late than never I guess, so here we go! I'm now up to 19 minutes jogging (or trundling as I mostly refer to it). And that may not seem much from where you're reading, but I am one proud lady right now. Especially as I've had quite a busy schedule for the last week so have gotten up early to fit in my run before work! This morning it was even snowing when I was trundling around Rathmines. But trundle I still did.
To quickly bring you up to speed on why I'm climbing Kili...a friend of mine asked if I'd do it last year. I said yes, but didn't quite get around to bringing it up with my boss for a couple of months. When I did he was totally up for it and readily agreed to leave for the climb. And then I went on holidays to Argentina for a couple of weeks and ate loads of steak and drank loads of malbec...and came back and was still doing it, oh yeah, just wasn't training for it.
In the meantime the friend who asked me to do it with her went and got engaged and arranged her wedding for the month we were meant to climb it. However I had asked my old boss Adam in Sydney if he'd be interested in climbing it, and he was. But he's a fitness instructer now so he'll have no trouble skipping up it, while I'm bluffing it as a marketeer just now, which gives me no advantage at all.
So, under the tutelage of colleague and friend Michael Geraghty (who climbed Kili last year and loved it) I'm going to get fit and I'm going to conquer Kili!
I'm going to post regularly about how my training is going, how I'm feeling, who I'm going to fundraise for in conjunction with the trip etc. And I'd love if you pop by every so often to see how I'm doing.
Lollipop x
